The Commonwealth Curriculum Pack

active learning centre

Background

The Commonwealth Curriculum Pack website was developed as part of the legacy programme for the XVII Commonwealth Games in Manchester. The regional legacy programme (the NW2002 Economic and Social Single Regeneration Programme) included a number of projects which aimed to ensure that people, and in particular disadvantaged communities, living in the North West of England would benefit from the hosting of the Games in Manchester.

The website was developed as a collaborative venture between the North West development Agency using SRB funding, Sport England and United Utilities. Managed through the Legacy Programme, the educational activities and content were developed in partnership with teachers and subject specialists from 4 LEA’s and representatives from Liverpool John Moore’s university Sports Education Department.

The site which was launched on the 27th September 2001 has 14 individual curriculum activities, information on 10 Commonwealth Games sports developed in partnership with National Governing Bodies and 3 specially commissioned 3D games—Netball, Hammer Throw and Squash.

For the re-launch of the site on November the 7th 2003, a specially commissioned DVD featuring the paragon of health and fitness—Johnny Vegas—will be distributed along with a CD ROM version of the site, to all schools in the North West. The DVD contains 6 thought-provoking and inspirational films which will provide stimulus for discussion and research across a range of curriculum areas including, PE, History, Geography and Citizenship.

Funding

Funding for ccp2002 currently comes from the Government's Single Regeneration Budget, Sport England and United Utilities. Europress have also supported financially the development of the on-line games.
